I have worked with industrial grade 3D printers for several years (Stratasys uPrint) and also own various 3D printers. My very first printer was a Printrbot Simple Metal. This was a great entry level machine, however, I soon wanted dual extrusion capabilities for soluble support.
I gave the Printrbot away and then purchased a FlashForge Creator Pro and have successfully been printing ABS + HIPS for years. The results are very impressive for a sub $2000 printer and, from my experience, closely rivals the quality of the Stratasys uPrint, a $30,000 machine.
A couple of years later, I acquired a Formlabs Form 2 for further capabilities. The resolution of SLA and breadth of engineering resins Formlabs offers are amazing and it has enabled great functional as well as looks-like prototypes.
Since then I’ve purchased a laser cutter, a Form 3, CNC plasma cutter, small vacuum former and opened up my own business at Ember Prototypes and became a brand ambassador for Formlabs. I’m always expanding my capabilities and if you’re interested in getting parts made with me, check out some of the examples below and get in touch.
One of the first consumer grade SLA printers that was launched on Kickstarter. They’ve since become the standard in entry-level SLA printing.
SLA prints using Tough resin (ABS-like) to test a concept with difficult overhangs and geometry.
SLA print to test accuracy and minimum feature sizes for SLA. The Form 2 is capable of accuracies below +/-0.2mm and can print features smaller than 1mm (the smallest feature sizes in this calibration tool were 1mm)
An ABS print of the previous enclosure prototype. FDM can quickly be used to test functionality, while SLA can be used to test fit, look, as well as function.
Simple test print to gauge overhang quality with soluble support material. Soluble support enables overhangs to print with zero gap above the support material, meaning better surface finish on overhangs.
An ABS+HIPS print of a partial skull. High quality organic geometries are only possible with soluble support.
