The initial CHIMERA impactor and electronics (see here) were controlled through USB from either a laptop or PC. The customer wanted a cost-effective way to eliminate the need to supply a laptop or PC in order to increase portability and reduce costs. To address these concerns, an Android app was developed so that the user could control the device using a tablet.
Tablets in today's market are extremely affordable. Initially, the customer requested if a touch screen interface would be feasible. However, after going through the pros/cons and taking into account production volume as well as cost, an off-the-shelf Android tablet was the most attractive and simplest solution. In the end, a 9'' tablet which met all the requirements cost only $100. This is amazing considering you get a touch-screen interface, an entire operating system, and a framework that allows you to easily develop and deploy apps.
